چکیده

INTRODUCTION The use of ethanol as an alternative motor fuel has been steadily increasing around the world for a number of reasons. Domestic production and use of ethanol for fuel can decrease dependence on foreign oil, reduce trade deficits, create jobs in rural areas, reduce air pollution, and reduce global climate change carbon dioxide buildup. Ethanol, unlike gasoline, is an oxygenated fuel that contains 35% oxygen, which reduces particulate and NOx emissions from combustion. Ethanol can be made synthetically from petroleum or by microbial conversion of biomass materials through fermentation. In 1995, about 93% of the ethanol in the world was produced by the fermentation method and about 7% by the synthetic method. The fermentation method generally uses three steps: (1) the formation of a solution of fermentable sugars, (2) the fermentation of these sugars to ethanol, and (3) the separation and purification of the ethanol, usually by distillation.

Direct fermentation of amorphous cellulose to ethanol by engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae coexpressing Trichoderma viride EG3 and BGL1.

Direct ethanol fermentation from amorphous cellulose was achieved using an engineered industrial Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain. Two cellulase genes endoglucanase (eg3) and β-glucosidase (bgl1) were obtained from Trichoderma viride and integrated into the genome of S. cerevisiae. These two cellulases could be constitutively coexpressed and secreted by the recombinant strain S. cerevisiae-eb. T...

مقایسۀ پتانسیل تولید اتانول از بیوماس لیگنوسلولزی گونه‌های‌ هالوفیت در مناطق بیابانی (مطالعۀ موردی: Atriplex leucoclada و Suaeda vermiculata)

World reserves of petroleum are being consumed rapidly and expected to exhaust by the middle of this century. This realization has led to the introduction of various grades of ethanol supplemented fuel. However, ethanol demands met from sources used for food may cause food shortage. This necessitates exploiting saline lands to produce non-food ligno-cellulosic biomass which, may be converted in...

Bioethanol production from rice straw residues

A rice straw - cellulose utilizing mold was isolated from rotted rice straw residues. The efficient rice straw degrading microorganism was identified as Trichoderma reesei. The results showed that different carbon sources in liquid culture such as rice straw, carboxymethyl cellulose, filter paper, sugar cane bagasse, cotton stalk and banana stalk induced T. reesei cellulase production whereas g...

Impact of Pretreated Switchgrass and Biomass Carbohydrates on Clostridium thermocellum ATCC 27405 Cellulosome Composition: A Quantitative Proteomic Analysis

BACKGROUND Economic feasibility and sustainability of lignocellulosic ethanol production requires the development of robust microorganisms that can efficiently degrade and convert plant biomass to ethanol. The anaerobic thermophilic bacterium Clostridium thermocellum is a candidate microorganism as it is capable of hydrolyzing cellulose and fermenting the hydrolysis products to ethanol and othe...

Access to cellulose limits the efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis: the role of amorphogenesis

The efficient enzymatic saccharification of cellulose at low cellulase (protein) loadings continues to be a challenge for commercialization of a process for bioconversion of lignocellulose to ethanol. Currently, effective pretreatment followed by high enzyme loading is needed to overcome several substrate and enzyme factors that limit rapid and complete hydrolysis of the cellulosic fraction of ...
